The Nokia E65 - sturdy but stylish and a winner for all
While the Nokia E65 is aimed at the top end user being a smart phone that syncs with your home PC and Outlook not to mention the new Windows Vista mail and contacts, it is an all round winner suitable for all. It can take a microSD card which boosts its memory considerably and as you can drag and drop media or sync with Windows media player the memory card option is a Godsend. You get around 40MB memory available built in which doesn’t go too far.
The phone comes in mocha and red, red of course being more of a fashion statement and mocha more on the conservative side. One of the best features of this phone is if you are looking to gain access to e-mail, with the built in mail client and Wi-Fi this is affordable, quick and easy and you have the option of syncing with an exchange server. This also means your calendar and contacts are always in sync with your desktop or laptop. You can also view MS Word documents with the built in office software, however on the other hand you can also enjoy a multitude of Java games when you fancy taking a break.
The phone is Symbian based running on S60 third edition which means you have access to a wide variety of applications and games. This also allows the user to customise the display to include a variety of options such as showing e-mail, text messages and calendar items. It does have to be said that while the screen is excellent when it comes to light, colour and contrast the text on the display is very small and there is no way of increasing the font size. The screen is QVCA at 240 x 320 pixels with 16 million colours and is gorgeous even with the small font.
The Nokia E65 is a pleasure to hold, the non-slip feel of the leather look cover allows you to feel comfortable at all times the phone is in your hand and the slide function is easy to open one handed. It also feels sturdy and is spring loaded so it snaps back into place very satisfyingly when you close it.
The phone has a usable 2 megapixel camera, which if you are taking shots outside with plenty of light is great, inside and it is a let down. The downside is there is no flash for the camera, though there is a night option however this is pitiful at best. The camera also doubles as a video camera which allows you to take videos of indeterminate length, providing of course you have the memory and this is where a microSD card is essential.
The sound through the speakers is more than adequate, in fact for mobile phone speakers they fall above most other phones. There is a graphic equaliser with plenty of pre-sets and the ability to customise to your own tastes. It would have been nice to have the option of using your own headphones but it is a standard Nokia pin plug. The adapter is also on the bottom of the phone which means the phone has to be upside down or on its side when it is in the pocket.
